A guide to the best coffee bars in Belgium’s coffee capital.

The hippest places to get a good coffee in the center, or just outside of it.

Belgium is more of a coffee country, rather than a tea country. Although being a small country with a very limited population, there is a strong culture when it comes to food and beverages. Regarding the average coffee consumption, Belgium beats the United States in coffee consumption, and the undisputed caffeine winner is Antwerp, capital of Flanders. The city serves the black gold in several hip coffee spots, sometimes well hidden. But don’t look any further, here’s only a small selection of where you should go! In random completely order:

1. Butchers coffee

Butchers Coffee is a coffee hotspot of the purest kind, and probably the latest addition to Antwerp’s coffee scene. Two friends, Dave and Paolo, a perfect match, brought the art of coffee-making from Australia, perfected it,  and today they welcome you with open arms in their most original venue. Everything at Butchers Coffee is thought through, and not a single detail is a coincidence. They keep a close eye on the complete process, from roasting until serving. You can also find a fine selection of teas or freshly homemade lemonades on the menu.

The coffee bar is located in a former butcher’s shop and this gives it the unique atmosphere. Old elements have been kept, and you can get your coffee for example in the former meat fridge. Outside, in front of the big window, you can enjoy some sun and see the surroundings.

Caffènation, a well known coffee roaster from Antwerp, will soon be roasting the very first “butchers roast”. This coffeebar is for us the unrivaled number one.

In Antwerp, everyobody knows the Caffènation. They are for over 13 years around, and for many people it is close to being a second home. They roast the best coffee around, and the coffee is being used in many coffee bars until far outside Antwerp. You can buy their different roast in the webshop, or you can go there and taste it for yourself.

The atmosphere there is always great, and if you want your coffee to be served by absolute prefessionals, this is simply the place you hàve to go! Check out their website! Oh, and if you are in Amsterdam one day, there’s a second Caffènation in the Warmondstraat 120.

My personal favorite place to go get a coffee when I am in the center, is Coffeelabs. The well trained baristas can serve you any kind of coffee, from a flat white to a doppio, made from their own house-blend. If you’re not a caffeine-head, you can always try the homemade iced tea, a hot chocolate, or many other things!

Coffeelabs is also a perfect lunch spot, and the Idealabs building is a platform where many creative tyhings are happening. The central location make it the perfect caffeine getaway before, during, or after your shopping day! More information? Visit the website!

4. Copper

Somewhat hidden, but a true jewel is Copper. It’s just outside the center, it’s in a residential neigbourhood, but it’s worth going there. The interior is absolutely stylish, it’s rather small, and it’s much more than ‘just’ a coffee bar. It’s a very quiet and cosy place to be, and the interior is full of detail. It’s the kind of place where you can settle and unwind from the busy city life.

Besides coffee and tea, there are some delicious pastries to enjoy, some fresh soup to taste and more delicious healthy meals to try out. The view is perfect, as the bar is located on a corner. Make the effort, take a bike or a tram, put your best shoes on, and go the extra mile to visit this beautiful spot in the more south part of Antwerp!

5. Esco*bar

If I tell you that this bar is owned and managed by Koen Vandervliet and Vicky Calderon Escobar, an enterprising couple, and you can easily see where the name comes from. Situated at only minutes walking from Antwerp’s beautiful Central Station, they always welcome you with open arms. The atmosphere is always very warm, and the coffee is great. But don’t go in there for a coffee only! They serve the best healthy food you can possibly wish for, and that makes this the ideal place to go for a lunch.

In summer, walk all the way back, hidden behind lies a perfect garden to escape the city for an hour or two, and enjoy this bar and it’s offerings peacefully. Check out this place, check out the website, and see this truly attractive spot for yourself!

6. Kolonel Koffie

Our first addition to the original list, thanx to our reader Roland, is the very stylish but above all first quality coffee bar Kolonel Koffie, just outside the south part of the center of Antwerp. Kolonel Koffie is specialized in making really good coffee, and even better: since 2016 they roast their own coffee. Everything is done with an eye for detail, with a lot of love, and in a very attractive interior overlooking one of Antwerp’s most cosy squares in a growing neighborhood, the Troonplaats.

Besides coffee there are a few extra reasons to go there, like homemade toasted muesli with yoghurt and fresh fruit, croissants, pains au chocolat, homemade muffins and cake, and sandwiches for lunch. This is the reason why on weekdays during lunch, locals like to get their coffee and their lunch in Kolonel Koffie. If you like the coffee, a small store gives you the chance to take some of the good home. Free wifi available, so this is also a fine spot to get some work done while having some of the black gold. Summarized in just a few words: a must go for coffee lovers!

  1. Thanks! Nice list. We also visit always the coffee bar Caffe Mundi when we are in Antwerp. Perfect coffee and you can choose from different coffees: like costa rica, Guatemala or the houseblend / coffee of the month.

  2. You missed a few 😉

Boelens & Cole, Crumbles & Beans, Cuperus, Me & My Monkey, Viggo’s, Coffee & Vinyl.

  4. Snackbar Hopland. Corner of otto veniusstraat and hopland serves one of the best doubleshot latte’s in Antwerp.
