Both the biggest and the smallest.
But by far the best festivals!
Belgium hosts the most festivals in the world, compared to the number of inhabitants. So I think it’s safe to say that this small country has a true festival tradition. Some of the festivals are known worldwide and host ten thousands of people and hundreds of artists, others are rather small and cosy. There is a variety of music to discover, from jazz, to rock, over electronic, folkloristic, and so much more. Below are just a few of the ones that pop in my head, or that are different from the rest and should be worth mentioning in my opinion. Feel free to add yours in the comments below.
Annually, this is the first festival of the summer! It’s famous among lovers of punk music, and was held in 2017 on the 29th and the 30th of April, in Meerhout. You can expect artists like Deftones and Pennywise, and every year around 30.000 people show up during the weekend. I’ve been a few few times, and I can assure you it’s a good festival! Let’s look forward to the 2018 edition!

Graspop Metal Meeting is yearly held metal festival in Dessel, in the province of Antwerp. Since 2008 around 135.000 visitors come to listen to all kinds of metal in this world famous festival, that is one of the biggest in its kind. Over 100 bands perform in the festival, from smaller local bands, until Deep Purlple, Rammstein, Scorpions and much more. This year the festival can be visited from June 16 until June 18.
Put your speakers loud, and have a look at last years aftermovie!
A completely different festival: Cirque Magique. From the 4th until the 6th of August their third edition will find place in the fields of Ledegem. Only the third edition, but this circus themed electronic festival is a highly professionally hosted and beautifully decorated outdoor happening! Last year the three stages, with different electronic sub-styles, the nice sunny weather, the enchanting atmosphere and the friendly people made this “smaller” festival a top event! I’m curious what this year will bring…
Can’t wait until August the 4th? Than have a look at last year’s aftermovie.
“For Aftrsun festival 2017 we’re gonna take a trip ‘into the wild’! Let’s dress up as animals in the jungle, and get lost in the wilderness.” If you like smaller electronic music festivals, you’ll definitely looove Aftrsun. They have an annually changing dress code, that creates a nice atmosphere within the people. The music selection is beyond great, and the decoration is fabulous! The organisation of this festival is growing fast, and these guys are doing a fantastic job! I can’t wait until 11-12-13 August, when the hills in Aarschot turn again into a mystical dance location…

Let’s get back to some rock music! Rock Werchter is since years an established value in the Belgian festival scene. Every year +150.000 people visit the fields in Werchter, where the biggest rock and pop artists of the world stop by every year. I go almost every year, but you need to be fast: months in advance this festival is sold out due to the many people from all over the world coming here to see their favorite artists! The magic weekend: June 29th until July 2nd 2017. Check the RW16 aftermovie!
Tomorrowland started back in 2005, and I remember being there with my ex-girlfriend, and the festival being rather small. It was nothing more than a small white tent, in front of where the mainstage is these days. You had to walk all through the park De Schorre in order to arrive there. In just over 10 years time, it has grown to be the most known dance festival worldwide, and the nature park is completely occupied during the one (or two) weekends that the festival takes place. It attracts people from all over the world, the stages and the surroundings are beautifully ornamented, lots of things are happening, and basically it is one big festivity for ears and eyes. I don’t have to tell you about all the flights they charter, about the wicked production it must be, or about anything else. Just look at what they also do so very well: the trailer of last year! This year on July 21-23 and July 28-30!
Completely different again, but that makes the festival scene in Belgium so interesting, is Jazz Middelheim. It’s without doubt the most relaxed and intimate festival in this list, attracting a very wide variety of people visiting. But don’t get mistaken, even though the festavl may feel intimate and relaxed, the atmosphere is very international, and the line-up quite impressive! Every year in Park Den Brandt in Antwerp, When? The 3rd until the 16th of August! It’s a bit more early than most years, but let’s hope the weather will be fine! We haven’t found any aftermovie, so let’s have a look at the “teaser“!
Back to the electronics! Every year early in summer, to be more specific on the 2nd until the 4th of June (sorry guys, next year more luck) in Domain De Plas in Houthalen-Helchteren is another fast growing festival. The weather can be a bit tricky at this time a year, but I had some great editions there anyway, sun or no sun! Decoration is nice, people are always in a good mood, and the music is through the roof! There’s also an indoor edition, in fact I believe that’s how it all started, but let’s count down to next year, to another outdoor edition! Party on!
What? The aftermovie? Here you go!
A festival for the somewhat younger generation. It started off as a small festival inside the city, making it very unique, organized by local retail store owners. After a while the festival became too big, and had to move a few times, to new locations outside the city. This festival is all about dance and dancing, so put your dancing shoes on! Every first saturday of September, meaning that this year it’ll be the 2nd of September, just outside Antwerp. For more info check the website, or the aftermovie!
This one takes place every year in Brussels, on the nice location of Tour & Taxis! This is the festival for people that like music like Hiphop, Reggae, Dubstep and others. Couleur Café has six stages, but is besides its music also known for the magnificent world food on the food market! If you like music from around the world, and if you like an interesting mixture of people, Couleur Café will be your thing! And the aftermovie? Right here!
4 and 5 August.
14th until the 23rd of July
the 4th until the 13th of August
4 and 5 August.
