Once A Beautiful But Now Abandoned Panoramic Restaurant
A Magnificent Viewpoint Overlooking Lisbon
It is the last day of 2017, and within a few hours we will be celebrating the transition of the New Year in Lisbon. I came a few days earlier to this beautiful city, together with my best friends, to celebrate and to see some culture. It’s a sunny day, and we decide to go to Monsanto. Monsanto Forest Park is a protected forest in Lisbon, Portugal, the largest green area in and around the city, with almost 1000 ha (10 km2) of nature. It offers a well diversified tree-covered area to the Portuguese capital, and a large number of species were introduced in the Monsanto Hills (Serra de Monsanto) during the reforesting period. Rumor has it that somewhere inside these hills, stands a testament to great architectural design and the party life of the 1960’s: the Panoramic Restaurant of Monsanto…
Although the magnificent building has now been abandoned for over 10 years, despite the decay you can still observe the beauty and the grandeur of its glorious past. The restaurant still has the flair that is reflects the faded sixties era, and it offers visitors a view of Lisbon that leaves you speechless for minutes… The winding staircase, the large glass windows, and the concrete structure make the building still attractive even in its desolated state of emptiness.
History of the Panorâmico de Monsanto
It is doubtful the restaurant will ever restored in its original state, but little imagination is needed to be able to imagine how this abandoned place used to be an enchanting destination for both residents of the area as well as tourists seeking an unforgettable stylish dinner with an unbelievable view.
The building has had several functions: not only it has been a restaurant, but it has also been a nightclub, a bingo, and later on offices and eventually a warehouse for building materials. The restaurant “Panorâmico de Monsanto” opened in 1968, and was designed by the Portuguese architect Chaves da Costa. Almost 50 years later, this deserted building, although completely in decline, still appeals to the imagination…
How to visit the Panorâmico de Monsanto
The restaurant and the surrounding area is normally closed to visitors, but you can visit the abandoned site. It is possible to walk around, and even go all the way up to the panoramic bar. Walk up the beautiful staircase, or wander around in the subterranean levels. You will find the structure damaged by vandalism, and shards of glass are laying around everywhere.
There’s graffiti throughout the building, but it all contributes to a special atmosphere. The beautiful panoramic view over Lisbon is breathtaking, and the best I have experienced of all of the viewpoints we did. On the side of the building you can go down in what was once an elegant glass house. I can guarantee you that a visit to the “Panorâmico de Monsanto” is a unique experience!
